How to use Cite Them Right

Referencing styles

Cite Them Right can advise you about how to reference certain sources according to different referencing styles. When you're reading about a source, check to see if the referencing style menu is visible. If so, click on the menu to see which other referencing styles Cite Them Right has information on.

Cite Them Right contains information on referencing all of its sources in Harvard (author-date). However, there is also information about referencing in:

  • American Psychological Association (APA)
  • Modern Humanities Research Association (MHRA)
  • Modern Languages Association (MLA)
  • Oxford Standard for the Citation of Legal Authorities (OSCOLA)
  • Vancouver referencing system
  • Chicago referencing system
  • Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

Remember to always use the referencing style recommended by your tutor.


Accessing Cite Them Right

How can I login?

Access to the main content is only available if your institution has a subscription to Cite Them Right.

If your institution has a subscription, access to the majority of the site's content may be automatic or will be automatic once you have logged into your institution's network or portal. Therefore, if you are on campus, for example, you may not need to login specifically to access the Cite Them Right.

If you have a username and password to access Cite Them Right you can login using the link in the top right of the page.

What browser should I use?

We would recommend always using the latest version of your preferred browser, such as FireFox, Edge, Chrome or Safari.

This site can be accessed from across a range of mobile devices including iPad, iPhone and Android phones.

How much does it cost?

Who can subscribe?

Subscriptions to Cite Them Right are only available on an institution-wide basis. Please contact us at OnlineSalesUK@Bloomsbury.com if you are interested or want to find out if other colleagues at your institution have already been in touch. We're sorry but Cite Them Right is not yet available for individuals to subscribe to. If you'd like to use it, please forward an email to your librarian asking them to get in touch with us.

How do students access?

Cite Them Right is available for institutional subscription so we open up access for all staff and students including remote access. This can be through a number of options such as IP access (including proxy IP), OpenAthens, Shibboleth or referral URL from a secure portal, intranet or VLE.

We will be happy to discuss with you the best option for making Cite Them Right available and visible to all your students.

What technical requirements are needed to run Cite Them Right? Is it mobile compatible?

Cite Them Right is accessed via standard web browsers, including on tablet and mobile - no specialist software or apps are required. Cite Them Right has been developed in line with W3C guidelines for accessibility, and content can be accessed using a screen reader and keyboard navigation if required.

How does Cite Them Right differ from the book?

Cite Them Right has the same comprehensive coverage and has been developed with the same expert authors. Benefits of being a digital resource include the ability to search for sources, see correct examples and construct references in the system. Students can also cut and paste this to use in their written work.
